As anyone who has been around this part of the country knows, the beach is supposed to be the place to go to get away from the heat when it is hot in the Valley.
It is strange when the beach is hotter than the valley in summer and early Fall, it’s even stranger when the beach is hotter than Eastern Oregon. Eastern Oregon and the Rogue Valley are typically the hottest parts of the state in the summer.
Fortunately there is only one more day of hot weather before the autumn 🍂 weather returns.
I have had today off work, so I got to sleep through the night last night. I also did some Baking yesterday. I also have been working on my knitting. Beings that I have a lot of sock yarn, I am trying to get as much of it knit up as soon as possible. I am trying to get as many pairs knit up before the nice days are gone for good.
Work didn’t schedule me for today or tomorrow, so I am able to enjoy a few days off and be ready to dive into a full week next week.
Yesterday I spent the afternoon knitting and watching Hulu.
Today I slept in, then got ready to head out. I stopped at Freddie’s and Black Rock Coffee before running by work to check the schedule for next week. On the way home I stopped by Cooper Mountain Nature park, to take some pictures. While I love hiking, I didn’t want to put that much strain on my knee that I banged up pretty good a couple days ago.
Since I got home, I have been baking some gluten free and dairy free brownies while I waited for my KnitPicks package to arrive.
In my KnitPicks package, I got the yarn swift I ordered as well as a hank of the KnitPicks stroll fingering yarn. I really didn’t need to order more yarn, but it was a choice of buying a hank of yarn and qualify for free shipping or just order the swift and be a penny shy of getting free shipping so I would have had to pay for shipping. The choice was get more yarn or pay for shipping. Yarn won.
I have been enjoying relaxing since I got home from work yesterday morning.
The rain has finally returned and we are having our first storm of the season!
Just a week ago the temperature hit 90, and a month ago the highs were still in the 90’s and hitting 100 on multiple occasions. Today only got to 59. It has definitely shifted.
We have finally gotten our first measurable rain in months. With the rain we are and have been getting has been helping with the wildfires, especially with the Eagle Creek Fire in the gorge, but with that there is now the increased threat of landslides and rockslides.
My schedule this week has changed a little bit but I do prefer this better. While I still start work late, it still is a bit more reasonable, and there are a few more people out and a few places still open when I am heading to work. I am also getting off earlier, so I am beating the morning rush hour, yet is still late enough that there people out starting their day. It is also dark so by the time I get home, have some breakfast, shower and head to bed, it is only starting to get light. When it is cloudy and rainy, it is darker outside which makes it easier to sleep during the day. Going to bed at a quarter to 7 means I get more sleep in one stretch before I wake up in the afternoon. I am still napping in the evening before I have to leave for work, but I am still getting in some time to knit and watch a few YouTube videos and a few episodes of tv shows on Netflix.
Saturday I had gone out and gone to the stash tea store, to pick up some more tea. I picked up a couple boxes of English Breakfast Tea, as well as several 10 tea bag packs of teas I wanted to try. I had gotten: Raspberry White Tea, Cranberry Pomegranate herbal tea, Acai Berry Herbal Tea, Christmas Eve Tea and Christmas Morning Tea.
My first week at my new job is over. It feels like it flew by. Then again I feel like I slept through most of it. Then again I kind of was. If I wasn’t at work, or eating food I pretty much was sleeping.
At some point this afternoon I should take a nap. Beings that I don’t have to be getting up at 1:30 in the morning, I can attempt to get a regular night of sleep.
Besides being a bit tired, and knowing that I did work this week, the other way I know I did is because I am kind of sore. I took an Aleve this morning before I left.
This week I have driven to work in the early hours of the morning when it was dark, to get off work and come home during the morning rush hour. Getting glimpses of the freeway made me glad I was taking the cross country route on surface streets.
After the first couple of days this week, it has really been fall like, which I have been loving. I have been longing for the cool mornings, and cooler afternoons that are still warm enough to going outside without a jacket but cool enough so that I am not roasting. I have noticed that some of the trees are starting to turn.
As I get more used to my work schedule and figure out the sleep schedule that works best, I am hoping to be able to get some more knitting done that I have this week. One episode of the blacklist and a couple short Vlogs on YouTube and I am done.
For the first week of working a new job, especially with hours I am not used to, this week went really well, and I am not dreading Monday.
I had my first shift of my new job this morning. I had to be up and out really early to start early. It was interesting starting work in the dark and seeing the sun start coming up while working.
I realized I was really hungry around 5 am, so after work I stopped at Trader Joe’s on my way home to pick up some apples, bananas and Kind Bars. I wasn’t initially looking for kind bars but that is what I ended up buying since clif bars really didn’t sound good.
After I got home, I showered, ate breakfast and went to bed. I went to bed around a quarter to eleven this morning and pretty much slept straight until a quarter to give this evening.
I got up, had some dinner, watched a few vlogs, and knit for a bit.
Definitely going to get some more sleep before going back to work.
For now my job is a seasonal part time position, but I at least have a job for now. I am thankful to have a job again.
Part of why I am tired today is because my job is more physically demanding than my previous job. I like working hard and being tired at the end of the shift or end of the day.
Even though today got up to 90, that can happen this time of year. This morning, when I went to my orientation for my new job this morning, it looked, felt, and smelled like fall. Looking out the kitchen window at 4:30 pm, and the backyard is all in shadows, the light has totally changed in the past couple weeks.
I landed a part time seasonal job, after a spring and summer without a job.
I originally wasn’t going to address the fact that today is September 11th. Then a friend’s Facebook post kind of got me thinking. This friend was only 1 when the terrorist attacks happened, so she doesn’t remember the day. Her post was along the lines that it hadn’t even been mentioned once during her school day. My thoughts were pretty much “I’m not surprised”. Before going off on me, telling me I am cold and heartless, I am not. Every person who lost their life that day, or in the years since from injuries or illnesses caused by being there, or the young men and women who lost in the years since fighting in the war brought about by these attacks, are lives that can’t be brought back, and loved ones who have and still are grieving the loss of their loved ones. I don’t want to diminish the loss they feel and have experienced.
Why I am not surprised it is being mentioned less and less, and the realization of the fact that there will come a point when there ceremonies that take place on this day around the country will no longer happen, is because it happened with after Pearl Harbor – December 7th, 1941. While there are some still alive who were alive and old enough to remember The Attack on Pearl Harbor, but those who remain who can actually remember that day, are growing older or have passed away. The same thing will happen with 9/11, as those of us who lived through it and are old enough to remember that day. It will become a chapter in a history book, and no one left to tell first hand accounts of what started off as a normal Tuesday morning in September. Just because we don’t mention it every time we have a chance on the anniversary, doesn’t mean we have have forgotten by any means, it is a sign of healing and doing what life does best, moving forward.
A few short days ago it felt like summer would never end. It now feels like we have turned the corner from summer to Autumn. In the 10 day forecast there are only two days in the 80’s, all the other days are forecasted to be in the upper 60’s to mid 70’s, which should hopefully help with the wildfires burning in the area.
Today was in the mid 70’s, the skies were overcast and it was a bit humid, but other wise was fine. The winds were also calmer, which helped slow the spread of the Eagle Creek Fire. They are saying that the fire won’t be fully contained until sometime in October.
This morning I finished up a pair of socks, which I have been working on for a while, because I have been busy.
I also started another pair of socks. I have enough of the Wonderland Heather left that I am making another pair of Wonderland Heather and Marble Heather socks.
It’s hard to believe that the school year here in Oregon is back in session. It is just one of those things you have to think about when driving through a school zone.
I will be so happy if summer is really over. It is about time for it to be cooler and for the rain to be coming back.
The one nice thing about back to school and this time of year, now that school is in session and stores are trying to make room for the Halloween stuff? Awesome sales on school / work supply stuff like planners and lunch bags.
I had a couple interviews this past Monday, and yes I know it was a holiday. Maybe something will come of one of them. Even part time work is better than nothing. As long as it is honest work, no work is beneath me. I may have a college degree but I am not afraid of hard work, and working my way up from the bottom. I figure that all work experience is good experience and I have learned things from each of the jobs I have had. Everyone one career path and journey is different. If you would have asked me what I wanted to do 10 years ago, it was totally different than me now.
Today has been a rather busy day. I had a couple different job interviews earlier today. The first one was at 8:30 this morning, and it was on the other side of town. Well it technically was in one of the suburbs out past the other side of town, but when you cross over into the suburbs, here, one doesn’t really think much about it.
The job interview went quicker than I expected it would, so I came back home between interviews.
We have had a few days of relief from the forest fire smoke that has blanketed the city for a better part of a month, and it has been back in full force. It has been really bad.
My second interview was over in the Pearl District. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Portland, the Pearl, is a very ritzy, posh area that is takes affluence to be able to shop there regularly. It’s also just up from a not so great part of town.
On my way home from my second interview I stopped at target to pick up a few items. I have found that Target has the best selection and price on the Dove Advanced Care deodorant, which, I have found is the deodorant I can use without adverse side effects. I do realize it is more expensive and that it does have aluminum in it. As much as I am not a fan of using deodorant that contains aluminum, it if is that or have unpleasant side effects (either from a different deodorant causing a rash or going without and smelling to high heavens), I will deal with the aluminum.
This evening I have been spending some time knitting before I call it a night and head to bed.
